Rare Gazette Du Bon Ton Issues & Illustrations at Auction
We are delighted to bring to auction a rare collection of intact issues & full colour plates from Gazette du Bon Ton, the highly influential and renowned French fashion magazine.
A Force in Early 20th Century Fashion
Published by Lucien Vogel from 1913 to 1925, Gazette du Bon Ton was the leading French fashion magazine of the day – and a driving force in early 20th century fashion.
It showcased leading designers and couture houses including Pacquin, Poiret and Worth, often holding contracts that ensured exclusive publication.
A highlight of the magazine was the inclusion of exquisitely detailed plates by illustrators including Georges Lepape and George Barbier. Created using the Pochoir technique, they are notable for their rich colour and fine detail.
Hughely popular during the Art Deco era, Pochoir was a labour-intensive technique that required a découpeur to cut the stencils and a coloriste to apply paint by hand, allowing for a precision not available with lithographic printing. Collectors have long sought the illustrations, meaning complete issues of Gazette du Bon Ton are rare.
An Exquisite Fashion Showcase
Today, Gazette du Bon Ton is valued by fashion researchers and afficionados. Issues and colour prints are held in collections including New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, and The Smithsonian.
Our March book auction features fifteen original issues of the magazine, as well as a selection of Pochoir plates, providing a unique opportunity for collectors – and lovers of fine French fashion.
