Indigenous Art Auction Wrap

On Tuesday, we were delighted to present a live auction of Indigenous Art in partnership with Newstead Art. Held in Bondi Beach, Sydney, the auction drew strong bidding online and in the room, with two works by Emily Kngwarreye proving auction highlights.

Indigenous Art Auction Highlights

Presented in conjunction with Newstead Art, Indigenous Fine Art featured outstanding works from artists including Emily Kngwarreye, John Mawurndjul, Queenie McKenzie, Kathleen Petyarre, Minnie Pwerle, Rover Thomas, Willy Tjungurrayi and Tommy Watson. Theodore Bruce Director James Badgery was auctioneer for the event.

The standout lots were two painting by renowned Indigenous artist, Emily Kngwarrye. Her 1995 work, My Country, and Alhalkere from 1994, each sold for $81,250 IBP (including buyer’s premium), while Tommy Watson’s Waltitjata went under the hammer for $75,000 IBP.

There was fierce bidding for Sally Gabori’s Thundi, 2011. Australia’s representative at the 2013 Venice Biennale, Gabori (c. 1924-2015) had a major retrospective at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art Contemporain in Paris in 2022, and her work continues to be a collector favourite.

James stated: “We were delighted to hold our second Indigenous art with Newstead, with good attendance on site and online. After holding online only auctions for the last few years, it was also great to be behind the podium again, and we look forward to more live auctions soon.”
